European approach to monitoring anthropogenic CO2 presented at NASA Carbon Monitoring System

On the 7th of June a representation of the CoCO2 project was invited to present the progress of the European efforts to monitor anthropogenic CO2 emissions within the Copernicus programme at the NASA CMS Application Policy Speakers Series.

Gianpaolo Balsamo (CoCO2 and CHE coordination team) and Philippe Ciais (VERIFY and CoCO2 expert team) presented the status, illustrating the advances in the CHE, CoCO2, and VERIFY projects.

Philippe Ciais presented the annual synthesis work for CO2, CH4 and N2O with focus over Europe as carried out in VERIFY and several examples of the fact-sheets that illustrate how the information can be conveyed to stakeholders.

Gianpaolo Balsamo presented the building blocks of the monitoring and verification support capacity (CO2MVS) as identified in the CHE project (CO2 Human Emissions) and being built in CoCO2.



The seminar had a large attendance of about 100 people and was moderated by Edil Sepulveda and Ben Poulter, both Research Scientists at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center.

NASA has been advancing carbon cycle science thanks to the NASA’s Orbiting Carbon Observatory 2  (OCO-2) and 3 (OCO-3)  and the NASA GEOS modelling system

The possibility for collaborations involving the CoCO2 prototype system and the GEOS system will be discussed and explored further.
